Maintaining consistent oral hygiene habits when your child is young will greatly help increase their chances of maintaining a healthy mouth throughout their life. This includes brushing and flossing all of their teeth as soon as they emerge from the gums.

The act of brushing each morning and night, and flossing at least once each day when they are little will help establish this daily practice. As they get older you can let them play at brushing their teeth. Providing your son or daughter with a child-themed toothbrush and a child-safe toothpaste will also help keep them encouraged to brush their chompers.

If you are having a hard time flossing the teeth in the back of your child’s mouth, you might want to try using a small floss stick. As their dexterity improves you can let them attempt to floss their own teeth. Just make sure they understand not to force the floss or snap it into their gums.
