Caring for your little one’s smile is important as they develop and grow. Today, our Children's Dental Specialists of Lake County team is here to remind you about just that! You want to care their gums to make sure they are developing properly and in a healthy oral environment. Let’s take a look at some things you can do!
Fluoride is a valuable mineral that helps nourish and strengthen your child’s teeth. This helps prevent tooth decay and other dental issues. So, make sure you give your child water from the tap on occasion. This can mean feeding your child formula mixed with water or giving them a little bit of water in a sippy cup or bottle.
-Clean their smile
When cleaning your child’s chompers, use a child-sized toothbrush with soft bristles, a small head, and a large handle. At first, soak the brush with water and gently scrub the little teeth. Feel free to ask your dentist when you should introduce toothpaste to your child’s smile. Once your child gets older, around 3 years old, you can use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste to clean their smile.
-Be careful with bottle feedings
If your little one is still using a bottle, remember that baby bottle tooth decay is a common dental issue for younger children. This is because parents fill the bottle with sugary liquids and send it with the child to bed. It’s best to avoid doing this at all costs. Also, try to avoid putting sugary drinks in your child’s bottle as much as possible. It’s best to only have breastmilk, formula, and water in the bottle.
